Traditional Medicine Workshop
Learn more about traditional medicine from Dr. Jeanne Paul of the Tla'amin Nation.
Learn more about the ways of traditional medicine in this workshop through Dr. Jeanne Paul—a First Nations pioneer in the Naturopathic Medicine space in Canada.
In this class, you'll learn
- Traditional use of the herbs of that seasonal area.
- How the One Body system relates to the Season of the Herb’s area.
- The Chemical Constituent of the herbs.
- The herbal terminology, contraindications and its properties.
- How a menstruum extracts the medicines from the herb.
- How to create a formula and dosage.
- How to make a final product as a cream or a spray.
How to prepare for this workshop
- Dress appropriate for the weather—we'll be heading out rain or shine! If the weather calls for it, wear boots, rain jackets, etc.
- Bring baggies large enough to hold leaves, branches, or roots
- A box or a laundry basket to hold the jars of medicines to take home and bring back 30 days later.
- Before the second class, strain your medicine jars of medicines that have been curing for 30 days at home. There is not enough sinks to do this at the class, so please strain all medicines at home.
Once strained, the herbs can be placed in the garden or compost.
Ch’íyáqtel will provide lunch, as well as the 200ml canning jars, for each student.

This workshop will be hosted across two different classes: one on September 26, and one on October 17.
First Class
Date: Saturday, September 26, 2026
Time: 8 AM - 4 PM
Location: Ch’íyáqtel Community Hall | 45855 Promontory Road
8 AM — Carpool at the Ch’íyáqtel Community Hall to go and harvest up Chipmunk Road till 11 AM
11 AM — Return to Ch’íyáqtel Community Hall
1 PM — Learn basic medicine making with the herbs/plants harvested.
4 PM — End of class
Second Class
Date: Saturday, October 17, 2026
Time: 9 AM - 12 PM
Location: Ch’íyáqtel Community Hall | 45855 Promontory Road
In this class, you'll learn how to make a final product in the form of creams and sprays with the harvest!
IMPORTANT: The night before, please strain your jars of medicines at home the night before the class; there aren't enough sinks to accommodate all students medicines to do this in class.
About Dr. Jeanne Paul
Dr. Jeanne Paul is from the Tla’amin band. She graduated from the University of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon in 1991. She had become the first, First Nation to graduate in this profession for Canada. She now has practice in Chilliwack and concentrates her practice teaching Traditional Medicines throughout BC—always focusing of how to meld the Traditional Medicines with the Western Medicines.
